The Blue Meanie from yellow Submarine painted here is trying to break the ice with a bit of humor and menace, which to me reflects in Hopper the actor, just check out the film he directed "Backtrack" maybe you'll catch what I Mean.

When I first began making artwork with Dennis Hopper images it was while DH was alive, here in Taos to help promote the town marketing campaign of "The Summer of Love". Running in to him at a local restaurant I stopped and thanked him for helping save our local economy that summer. He generously allowed himself to be a part of the attraction for visitors to Taos.

In these next 10 assemblages here I'm using an image of Mr. Hopper which was taken on his arrest for a 1975 Hit & Run driving incident here in Taos. He had hit a parked car and took off without reporting it. When he saw me using this image he asked me where I'd gotten it from, my reply was, "Have you ever Googled yourself" that's all he needed to know.

The image for these next 6 pieces is from "The Last Movie" press photos. Although the film was met with disregard by the film's distributor, the making of this film was an amazing journey for Mr. Hopper.

I painted this image from a Yellow Submarine still frame.

The Beatles animated film "Yellow Submarine" was an enormous influence on me, at the time in grade school I drew and printed with block prints the characters from the film on everything, especially my grade school homework.

This sign was on the Gallery that Mr. Hopper owned here in taos for 2 years which was located on Kit Carson, his gallery occupied the front left space of Cabot Plaza. It's my understanding that the gallery exhibited Warhol and some of the other contemporary artists of the time period. During his tenure as a gallery owner 2 Warhol paintings were sold, which led to the demise of the gallery.

Day of the Dead 7 Dia de los Muertos VII: Part 2

Our annual Day of the Dead exhibit has been dedicated to the memory of Dennis Hopper. In past exhibitions we have had a number of family altars and art related to Day of the Dead depicting skeletons and such. This year the Hopper shrine is the featured altar, and includes the center piece created by Nancy Neva Gagliano, ($1,200.) along with photographs by Dick Spas and artwork by Robert Cafazzo.

Although I've posted this photograph before in the Easy Rider blog, here it has been reprinted by Dick Spas. "Dennis Hopper at Taos Pueblo Cemetery" $1,000. framed and matted. Mr. Spas works very meticulously printing over and over again destroying those prints which don't pass his expectations until he is happy with the results, then he frames and mats the photographs himself, again with great care. This photograph, (the first of which printing sold this past summer), is his second printing of this particular photo, these are archival silver gelatin prints. As Dick told me the other day he prints these very rarely, his archives are FULL of great Taos images, which brings me to the next one...

Dick Spas "Dennis Hopper The Actor's Studio" SOLD framed and matted the photo itself is 7 1/2" x 13"this is the first print of this particular photograph. Dick told me about it and asked if I'd like to include it in this exhibit, well OF COURSE. Again, in his vast photo archives this appeared. For the Harwood Museum $100. a plate benefit "Dinner with Hopper" at Antonio's restaurant as part of the Taos Summer of Love promotion this photograph was printed as a souvenir button, your ticket more or less to the event, perhaps 100 were printed as a button, Mr. Spas had never printed this piece before now, and here it is exclusively at Two Graces, wow.

Father William Hart McNichols "I Hold Out My Hand..." SOLD This is set into an Old Spice box that was my Mom's stepfathers, he was a big Old Spice guy before it was popular! Father Bill took about 10 days to finish this, but before he did he took a trip to California to visit his sister where he was telling someone about the piece he was working on for this exhibit. The woman immediately sight unseen purchased this original artwork! I didn't even get a chance to buy it for myself.

These 2 pieces are by Lindsay Robertson they are twig skeletons $50. each 9" x 14" on black velvet & 11" x 18" on brown corduroy.

When I asked these 3 young people to participate in this exhibition they were SO excited, in the past their mom Merce Mitchell has been a frequent guest artist for the Day of the Dead exhibit with her wonderful felted skull heads and other artwork. This year her very proud children have been included.

Day of the Dead 7 Dia de los Muertos VII

October 16-November 22, Two Graces Gallery will be featuring our ever popular exhibition of altars & artwork for Dia de los Muertos, our seventh annual Day of the Dead exhibit. The opening reception with the participants is Friday October 22 from 5-8PM.

Our seventh exhibit includes a tribute to Dennis Hopper by one of his long time friends Nancy Neva Gagliano. As she says, “Holding the memories of what seemed so long ago: a time that was dreamy and as fresh as this young man on a horse… …riding freely through the sage, between the mountain and his new mud palace (The Big House/Mabel’s) that he’d just bought and escaped to… …or so it seemed. That notion of ‘escape’, a theme of the time, was one feeling that I shared with Dennis and many others.”

This year the gallery is transformed into a very colorful environment thanks to a very generous loan from the folk art collection of Barbara & Bill Thomas. The wonderful vintage papier mache skeletons on display have added another dimension to our usual Dia de los Muertos exhibit. Still as always included are ristras of marigolds (cempasuchiles), banners of handcut Papel Picado (paper cut flags), and Sugar Skulls.

Interpretations on the theme of Day of the Dead by the very talented youngsters Dita (age 12) has created a fiber art skeleton, Wanashe (age 10) has made an altar tribute to her Grandmother & Chakotay Frank (age 7) is including paintings of skulls. The popular Skeleton Sock Monkeys and other animal critters handmade by Rebecca Sievers are back. Other participants are Katy George, Greg Moon, Vicki Barton, Father William Hart McNichols, Lindsay Robertson, William Jennings-Hill & Mel James.

Two Graces Gallery also celebrates our 7^th year of being in business here in Ranchos de Taos. Yes, indeed, we are truly blessed, thank you Taos!

Ram Hunter Panel

Above is my pen & ink drawing of ram petroglyphs, this panel is about 10 feet wide, and is on Japanese rice paper. Below is a close-up of a portion of this panel. This was done as a commission for a resident of Cimmaron, NM. I tend to avoid this town as I've been pulled over there twice for speeding, so be careful driving through it. There is an incredible herd of Antelope and Buffalo nearby, but alas also a rifle range just next to the game preserve.

From what I know about ram petroglyphs and how I think of them to this day is that they are directional signifiers, so many rams means so far to go to where they are pointing. In the drawing I've included snakes to signify water, so the rams are pointing towards a body of water.

When I draw animals facing to the right I am pointing to the East or my origins, as an easterner, and again towards Europe/Italy. When I draw animals facing toward the west I think of my own journey to the Southwest eventually landing me here in Taos, NM. Over the years I have been fortunate to wander around the southwest looking for petroglyphs, and as more and more people have seen my artwork I have been told other places to see these great ancient drawings. Here in Taos very close by is a rock formation with some of the best petroglyphs I've had the opportunity to see.

A few years ago I was honored with a commission of making a cross to be a replacement in this cemetery by one of the Taos Pueblo families. I made it in the old style and painted it white like all the others that stand there today.

These photographs are incredible and a great tribute to this time period in American Film History. Mr. Hopper lives on through his work in film, photography, art, writing, and of course the great iconic images of him.

Enjarre: Vintage & Contemporary Photographs of San Francisco de Asis Church

The first exhibit for 2010 at Two Graces Gallery features photographs by local artists Cris Pulos, Lenny Foster, Doug Yeager, Gak Stonn & Paula Valentine. This exhibition was timed to coincide with the re-mudding of the Church itself called the enjarre, an annual springtime event to scrape off the old crumbling adobe and plaster with mud and straw. As we are located in the shadow of this great icon I felt it quite fitting that we would honor the San Francisco de Asis Church in this way. People have been taking photographs of this structure since they started coming here with cameras for almost 100 years. The ever changing light, the clouds and the seasons all make this a photographers greatest challenge.
Local photographer Cris Pulos took this photo around 2AM during the full moon, it's richer and darker in real life. He has created an image that reflects Ranchos de Taos as a small village at the center of which is the great San Francisco de Asis Church.

Doug Yeager & Rchard Fallon images above, Doug's photo is the one which appears as sepia toned, my favorite images of Churches are always of the windows.

Here are 2 images by Lenny Foster, the green glow is caused from the street lights at night, the central image here is taken from a bird's eye view, Mr. Foster rented a 'cherry picker' for this great shot. The other is a vintage study by Philip Traeger.
